Using AI in Digital Marketing: A Practical Guide

Digital marketing has become unthinkable without AI. Building a content marketing strategy used to take weeks; now you can develop comprehensive strategies with AI tools in days or even hours. But using AI effectively isn't just about asking ChatGPT a few things. Using the right tools in the right places takes a strategy.

In this post, I'll share with practical examples how we use AI in every area of digital marketing.

Content Creation and SEO

Content marketing is where AI has the biggest impact. We've made our content production process fully AI-assisted, but there's a critical point here. We use AI as an assistant, not as a writer.

Our workflow goes like this: first we do keyword research with Ahrefs or Semrush. We identify the target keywords. Then we create a content outline with ChatGPT or Claude. We define the main headings, subheadings and the points to cover in each section. Finally, we fill the outline with our real experiences, customer stories and industry knowledge.

With this method, our content production speed has tripled, but we haven't compromised on quality. That's because the AI builds the draft and the structure, while we add the real content and the value. We have competitors who have AI write everything and publish it as is, and readers can feel the difference.

With Surfer SEO, we optimize every post for SEO. Thanks to target keyword density, competitor analysis and content scores, most of our posts rank on the first page of Google.

Social Media Management

On social media, we use AI in three areas: content creation, scheduling and analysis.

For content creation, we produce posts in different formats with AI tools. From one blog post, we get ten LinkedIn posts, five Twitter posts and three Instagram captions. We schedule them with Buffer or Hootsuite.

When we set up this system for a client, their social media engagement tripled in six months. That's because we became able to post consistently and regularly. Where there used to be two or three posts a week, there are now two or three posts a day.

For visual content, we use Canva and Midjourney. With Canva we create quick social media graphics, and with Midjourney we create eye-catching, original visuals.

Email Marketing

In email marketing, we use AI for subject line optimization, personalization and automation.

The AI features of tools like Mailchimp and ConvertKit optimize subject lines. Instead of A/B testing, we started using the subject lines the AI suggests, and our open rates went up by 10 percent.

For personalization, we do customer segmentation with AI. We create segments automatically based on customer behavior and send content tailored to each segment. This approach has significantly increased click-through rates.

Ad Management

In Google and Facebook ads, we use AI for ad copy creation and audience optimization.

For ad copy, we generate dozens of variations with AI and run A/B tests. We used to write three or four versions of copy for an ad campaign; now we generate twenty variations and pick the best performer. This approach cut our cost per click by 25 percent.

We implemented an AI-assisted ad strategy for an e-commerce client. We did ad copy, audience segmentation and budget optimization with AI tools. In three months, ad spend stayed the same while sales rose by 40 percent. That's a serious return on investment.

Customer Analysis and Research

We use tools like Perplexity and Consensus for competitor analysis and market research. We can quickly analyze trends in an industry, competitors' strategies and customer needs.

While preparing a market entry strategy for a client, we scanned academic research with Elicit. We comprehensively analyzed consumer behavior trends, pricing strategies and competitive dynamics in the industry within a few hours. This work used to take us a week.

Things to Watch Out For

When using AI in marketing, don't overlook a few important points:

Always check AI outputs. There may be incorrect information, an inappropriate tone or off-brand wording. Always have a human review every piece of content before publishing.

Don't become entirely dependent on AI. AI is a tool, not a strategy. Human insight and an understanding of customers should form the foundation of your marketing strategy.

Your competitors are using AI too. To stand out, enrich AI outputs with real experience. When everyone uses the same AI tools, what makes the difference is your unique perspective and experience.

Update your AI tools regularly. This field is developing very fast, and the best tool from six months ago may have fallen behind today.

When used correctly, AI is revolutionizing digital marketing. But the key phrase is when used correctly. Use AI strategically, and don't leave everything to it.
